Website Accolades!

It is always a surprise - a nice one - to receive unsolicited positive feedback.

At the November Board meeting, Board members noted an email from Levon Dennison, Waikato Management School, University of Waikato, who wrote:

" In regards to the KUMA website... it is the most well presented but also the most resourceful of the Māori business network sites I've seen.

The directory of businesses in particular, I found very easy to use in order to contact people.  It's by far the best of all the business networking sites".

The Board realises that it is not a competition on who has the 'best' website, of course.  And the Board looks forward to workingclosely with other Māori business networks around the country, to pool resources, run professional development programmes and to enhance the dissemination of knowledge.

The website is the online portal for achieving these very outcomes, for enabling interested people to contact KUMA members, to encourage collaboration, and to support the success of Māori in business in our region.  So, just knowing that the site was useful to Levon as he was surveying Māori businesses for their views on the attributes that make indigenous business sustainable, was a positive outcome for the investment that has been put into refreshing the KUMA website.

We wish Levon and his colleagues at the Waikato Management School every success in contributing to this important kaupapa.

Kia ora.  Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi...

KUMA Members Hui

KUMA hosted a successful hui attended by 40 Otago and Southland business people on July 14.  This event was supported by the University of Otago, Poutama Trust, Te Pūtahitanga, and Te Puni Kōkiri, with refreshments provided by the award winning KuruKuru vineyard - thanks to Hayden Johnston - and BB Catering.

A warm greeting was extended by KUMA Board Chair, Richard Kerr-Bell, and participants were treated to an engaging address by Kim Hill who is a MBFS mentor and has a business strategy and consultancy company based in Hamilton.  Presentations from the other organisations included information on the business support that is available to Māori businesses, the requirements for the varying levels of support, and what investment funding might be available.  Hayden then gave us an engaging commentary on the whakapapa of his vineyard and its strong connection to whānau aspirations, and a hint as to the expansion of the vineyard and a tasting shed which will be the place to go to in Tarras over the coming summer for wine tasting.

It was particularly pleasing to have people from all parts of the community attend: the DCC, University, businesses, runanga representatives, government agencies, advisors, coaches, consultants and financial institutions.

Participants lingered for a lot longer into the evening than anticipated, the networking was in full force, new members met long term KUMA members, and everyone agreed that the evening was well worth the time.

He aha te mea nui o te ao?  He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.

Many thanks to Karen Burnett, Account Manager, TPK for making this important event in the business community happen.  A further two similar events are planned for Queenstown and Invercargill early next year.

Nau mai, haere mai

Welcome to the new KUMA website.

A particularly warm welcome to new members, and greetings to many who have been KUMA members over the years.  This website is designed to give you the means and the opportunity to showcase your business, and connect with other businesses, customers, clients, and business advisors.  As our site is developed over the coming months, keep checking in, and send in suggestions.  All our current members will have their own page with their own unique information.  If you want help, guidance or support with setting up your page, contact us.  You will be able to announce any business incentives.  You can  network amongst the members for information on business development, professional personal development, and support to launch, up level and expand your business.  There will be training sessions and hui to attend - we will keep you informed, and you can keep others informed.

We look forward to meeting you at the regular breakfasts and other events that will be held throughout the year.

Ngā mihi i raro o te maru o te maaakitanga.
