The Ngāi Tahu Funds team along with the Ngāi Tahu Funds Committee are proud to introduce our new funding initiative for registered Ngāi Tahu rangatahi who are aged 13-25, Taiawatea.

Much like the Ngāi Tahu Fund’s criteria, rangatahi projects/events must align to atleast one of the following nine cultural pillars:

2.      Tikanga – protocols and customs

3.      Te reo – language

4.      Mahi toi – creative expression

5.      Whenua – landscape, place and locality

6.      Mahinga kai – customary food gathering, species protection and restoration

7.      Ngā uara – values and beliefs

8.      Ā kāinga, ā hapū, ā iwi – community engagement and participation; and

9.      Mana tangata – self-determination and self-confidence.

The full criteria for accessing Taiawatea is listed in the application form (attached to this email).

We are currently promoting the very first funding round of Taiawatea and this is due to close on Friday 31 March and the next round will not be held until late September.

If you know a rangatahi who is Ngāi Tahu registered, aged 13-25 who wishes to start cultural projects aimed at strengthening their Ngāi Tahutanga; and orto support their attendance at regional and national cultural event, please contact me on the details below.

2017 KUMA Board Hui

Tēnā Koutou katoa, ngā mihi o te Tau Hou ki to roopū o Te Kupeka Umaka Māori ki Araiteuru.

Greetings and welcome back to a new year.  We hope you had a good holiday, and return refreshed with exciting plans for 2017.

The KUMA Board had its first meeting for the year on 24 February.

Your current Board, as voted at the AGM in December, comprises:

Richard Kerr-Bell, Chair

Jeffrey Broughton (new), Corey Bragg, Marelda O'Rourke Gallaher, Toni Iaseto, Janine Kapa-Blair (new), Claire Porima, Heidi Renata (new), Karen Roos, Darryl Sycamore (new).

The new members were welcomed, and their collective experience acknowledged.  With an expanded Board, KUMA members in Otago and Southland can look forward to more activity over the year to come.

The focus will continue to be on providing members with opportunities to network, share information, and have access to advice to uplevel their business or their own professional development, and gain business exposure from their involvement in the network.

Planning is already underway for a 2017 Roadshow at the end of March, with events in Queenstown (28 February) and Invercargill (2 March - dates, times and agenda to be confirmed).

KUMA Board members will be joined by agencies such as Poutama Business, Te Pūtahitanga, Ngāi Tahu Tribal Economies, Te Puni Kōkiri and other business partners that support Māori Businesses with advice, funding and business initiatives.  Invitations will be sent out shortly to these events.

We will continue to keep you updated about KUMA events, but please also send us any comments, suggestions or opportunities and we will get these out to our members.

Heoi anō, tēnei te mihi miharo ki a koutou katoa.  .

He Kitenga - The Business of Success

What is needed for southern Māori businesses to succeed? An Otago research team has discovered that more than simply economic considerations are required.

The research team comprising Dr Katharina Ruckstuhl, Dr Maria Amoamo, Janine Kapa-Blair and Anaru Eketone, led by Dr Diane Ruwhiu, examined regional SMEs and the cultural, social and economic context within which they operate to better understand their contribution to economic development.

The team collaborated with KUMA members and with TPK's Dunedin office.

You can read more about the study and its conclusions by clicking on this link.

The research was funded by Ngā Pae o te Maramatanga, New Zealand's Māori Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE)
